Only in LA
bestiesonice: can you see Patton Oswalt, Kevin Nealon, and Reggie Watts doing stand up on the same stage in a 90 seat theatre for $5 on a Tuesday night. (okay, New York too, but LA without trading in breathing room and fresh air) I feel lucky to live in this city - there is never a shortage of good comedy to see and fun things to do.

Spotted at Coachella this weekend: Modern architecture-themed ice cream sandwiches sold from a truck. No, we don’t get it either, but apparently the creators are architects and also foodies, giving their homemade cookie sandwiches names like “Frank Behry” and “Mintimalism.” The company, Cool Haus, will be hitting LA streets this summer and tweeting locations a la the...

Hey all, I just proposed to my girlfriend and we’re trying to plan a wedding on a tight budget. Does anyone have any recommendations for affordable beachside venues for ceremony/reception in the LA/OC area?

To the 3rd Stop Gastropub
Dear 3rd Stop on 3rd St in Los Angeles.   First off, I’ve been coming to your bar for years now and I love it.  You have one of the greatest selection of beers on tap in the city, a nice demonstrated breadth that is just wonderful.  And the food, while the menu has changed several times, is more than delicious.  In your prime, you’ve had more than a few waitresses that I’ve...

A Good Angry Poem About L.A.
Once in a while, you can get pretty pissed off at this place.  Here is a satirization of Wallace Stevens’ “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird.” Thirteen Ways of Looking at Los Angeles by Elizabeth Wilcox I. Between mountains and the sea, The only moving thing Was the electronic billboard. II. I was broke, like an Angeleno  trying to sell something honestly. III.  Los...

heads up, tumblrs
Today and tomorrow’s ultraviolet index level in Los Angeles is 7, which means a person could be sunburned in 7-8 minutes of exposure to the sun. Everyday, the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center releases the next day’s UV levels and as we approach summer, these numbers have been climbing out of the low and moderate levels towards the high. “There are two...

I want to get away
From the moment I get out of work tonight, I have no plans until I go back to work at 7:00pm on Monday.  That leaves me with a solid two days for an adventure. Back in Wisconsin, people would get in their cars and drive to “up north” for weekend adventures.  I have no idea how this works in Southern California. How do I escape Los Angeles for two days, and who’d like to come...

If you’ve never been there, go now and help them out.  Their pumpkin bread and really all their treats are unbelievable, and their monastery is absolutely gorgeous.  Don’t let them go under!

It’s wrapping up, but there are still some really nice programs coming up at the Billy Wilder Theatre in Westwood.  Friday night will get you some classic behind-the-scenes Hollywood footage and Saturday some pre-code salaciousness. There’s also a noir series going at the Egyptian— we are spoiled for choice here, people!

I saw the sign on the way to work that the Laemmle Sunset 5 now has a special: $6 all day on Tuesdays.  Apparently, this is good at all the Laemmle Theaters in the city.  I haven’t been this happy about the Laemmle since they started taking credit cards (after everyone else in the world!)

APRIL IS VOLUNTEER MONTH!
emac: vol-la: A big welcome to Vol-LA from Sherry and Elizabeth. We’ve been living in LA for a while now and noticed that there are a lot of people in this town who would like to volunteer, but probably don’t know where to start. To make matters worse, most volunteer websites are geared towards kids or retirees and our age group is, well, forgotten. So follow us - there are so many inspiring,...
